Wild Fields charts the events that unfolded in Eastern Ukraine in 2014, from the early days of the popular revolt to the moment the country was officially considered to be at war. It bears witness to protests along the shores of the Black Sea in support of the annexation of Crimea, and to the occupation of government buildings in Donetsk by separatist militants. The photographs explore the status referendums that sought to legitimise the establishment of the People’s Republics of Donetsk and Luhansk, while examining the alliances forged between workers’ unions, police forces, and separatist groups. Interwoven throughout is the aftermath of the tragic downing of MH17 over Grabovo, and the suffering of innocent families whose lives were shattered in the crossfire of unpredictable battles. Wild Fields seeks to portray the trauma of war inflicted upon a society divided by language and historical ties, set against the backdrop of a global struggle for power.
